The Best Food Crops for Survival Gardening
Survival gardening is a trick for growing healthy and readily available food. Survival gardens are great for growing foods that you will enjoy eating. When determining which survival foods to plant, make sure to take into consideration factors like nutrition, calories and storage. Here are some of the best foods to plant for survival.
Beans
Beans, like adzuki are full of protein and their various and edible pods are good as well. Therefore, it is a good idea to grow a mix of pole beans and bush beans. You just need to remember to leave some of these beans for yourself so that you can plant another batch.
Corn
Corn is an ideal crop to have if you plan to plant some beans. Corn will give structure to your bean plants. When you see your cornstalk growing a couple of inches, you can plant beans around it. You just need to check that the soil can support both crops. The beans will climb up the stalks as they grow.
Squash
Since summer and winter squashes are good, they are both great for survival gardening. Summer squashes grow fast, so you can get food fast as well. Winter squashes grow longer, and they can be stored for longer. Therefore, it is a good idea to plant them both.
If possible, plant both squashes at the same time. However, if it is not possible, opt to plant the winter type first. These are also great to plant with beans and corns since they naturally sprawl on the ground.
